What Karratha's actual recorded water hardness is, what it does to hair and scalp over time, and what genuinely helps.
There's a question I get asked constantly, usually a few weeks into someone's first course of rituals with me: "Why does my hair feel different since I moved here?"
It's rarely one thing. But there's a factor almost nobody thinks to ask about, and it's sitting in every tap in town.
Where Karratha's water actually comes from
Karratha's drinking water is drawn from two sources: groundwater from the Millstream borefield, and surface water from Harding Dam, about 23km south-east of Roebourne. Together they form the West Pilbara Water Supply Scheme, which also services Wickham, Dampier, Roebourne and Point Samson.
That groundwater component matters more each year. Streamflow into Harding Dam has fallen roughly 80% over the past three decades, which means the region leans more heavily on bore-sourced groundwater than it used to — and groundwater picks up minerals from the rock it moves through in a way surface water doesn't.
The number that actually matters: hardness
Water hardness is measured in milligrams of calcium carbonate per litre. The guideline for minimising scale build-up is 200mg/L. Karratha's own recorded readings have sat well above that — averaging in the low-to-mid 200s, with peaks over 400mg/L in some years.
In plain terms: this is genuinely hard water, not a mild inconvenience. It's the same mineral load that leaves the chalky ring around your kettle and the film on your shower glass. Your scalp and hair sit under that same water, every single wash.
What hard water actually does to hair
Calcium and magnesium ions don't rinse away cleanly the way soft water does. Over repeated washes, they build a mineral layer across the hair cuticle — a residue sitting on top of the strand rather than being cleared by it.
- Dullness that product doesn't fix. Mineral buildup sits on the cuticle and scatters light instead of reflecting it, so hair looks flat no matter how good the conditioner is.
- Colour fading faster than expected. Mineral deposits interfere with how evenly colour sits on the hair shaft.
- Scalp dryness and irritation. The same mineral residue that dulls hair can sit on the scalp, disrupting its natural barrier.
- Extensions that need more care, not less. Mineral buildup on the hair shaft can make bonds feel less smooth and hair feel coarser at the root over time.
None of this means anything is wrong with your hair, your products, or your routine. It means the water itself is working against all three.
What actually helps
